Hush, Child

Lyrics   © Dan Edelstein  2013

Southern Ohio, 1923,
White-hooded Klan marched in town,
My 6-year-old mother shouted, “I see
Grandpa’s shoes under that gown!”

Hush, hush, child …
Change is a-comin’ around …

East Alabama, 1961,
Freedom Riders comin’ to town,
“Fire-bomb the Greyhound, blockade the door,
Kill all the ones who get out.”

“Why do you hate them?
They’ve  done nothin’ to you,
What does your Good Book say?”

Hush, hush, child …
Change is a-comin’ around …

Blood was dripping off the bridge to Selma,
In Birmingham they bombed a Sunday school,
The perpetrators went to church on Sunday,
I guess they don’t believe the Golden Rule.

“Why do you hate them?
They’ve done nothin’ to you,
… nothin’ … at all.”

(instrumental)

“Mississippi Burning” isn’t fiction,
Three young men were shot and buried there,
Just for tryin’ to register the voters,
Just for tryin’ to make elections fair.

Cleveland, Ohio, November 2012,
Governor, what do you say?
Voters wait for hours, far as you can see,
“No problem, we planned it that way.”

Hush, hush, child …
Change is a-comin’ around …
Hush, hush, child …
Change is a-comin’ around …
